AUGUST 2023 UPDATE

Spaces are changing vastly on the job site at PCMS. Finishing features like flooring, paint and light fixtures are now up. Community members can now see the completed main stair case in the front of the building which includes the original capstones.

There are a lot of highlights of the buildings rich history throughout. The 2022 PCMS bond project is nearing completion and will be ready to house students this school year.

MAY 2023 UPDATE

The job site has been extremely busy and spaces are changing daily on the historic 1921 historic building renovation. Carpet has been laid and light fixtures have been hung in many of the new learning spaces.

Construction workers have been giving careful focus on preserving many of the historic floors and other features of the original building.

On the exterior, concrete supports for the new grand staircase have been poured and the reconstruction has begun.

JANUARY 2023 UPDATE

Things are changing fast on the job site as progress continues, and our community will start noticing significant changes to the exterior of PCMS.

Here are two things to note during this progress; The towers will remain, and the grand staircase will return to its former glory.

The original plan for the grand staircase included:

  • 1. Pulling the caps and saving them

  • 2. Demo the interior stairs between the side walls

  • 3. Maintain the sidewalls but build up for ADA compliance.

  • 4. Pour new steps

  • 5. Replace the caps back on the brick

However, when we removed the cap, we learned that the brick that could be seen on the outside and inside of the wall, was only a veneer and was not a structural support for the staircase.  The interior "brick" was deteriorated/deteriorating beyond use or repair.  So now the plan is to:

  • 1. Keep the caps

  • 2. Demo the interior stairs

  • 3. Demo the side walls, but keep as many original brick as possible

  • 4. Pour new side walls and steps

  • 5. Put the old brick, mixed with matched new brick on the outside of the wall

  • 6. Replace the caps on top of the brick as before

EXTERIOR

Among many other things, sheetrock, fire suppression, electricity, plumbing, and elevators are in progress. The interior is starting to take shape, and many rooms now have walls and door frames.

INTERIOR

Above and below, the PCMS Auditorium looks a little different right now. The crew is working on fire suppression, additional LED lighting, re-furbishing the original lights, converting them to LED for re-installation, and so much more!

The “fake floor” is called a “dance floor.” Due to the slope of auditorium floors, it is challenging to get to the ceiling height for new work. Traditional lifts do not work on an incline, so they install a scaffold system at a good working height. This allows many trades to work simultaneously and safely.
